Steak Dinner

Before he became the truly outstanding chorus teacher that he was, I knew Kevin way back when he was a theatre student at Cherokee High. He was tremendously talented, but what I remember most was that while he always did his best work, he never took himself too seriously- he did not pout or fret when he did not get the part he wanted, he "acted well his part" whether it was a walk on or a lead, and he got along with everyone, all the time.

In the midst of tragedy, I always try to remember happier times- like when Kevin sang "Fee Nothing More" in our production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and shook the walls with his booming voice.

The funniest memory I have is when he was playing the lead in "Julius Caesar." During the famous assasination scene whoever was running the lights turned them back on too soon - and there was the recently assasinated Caesar standing there about to go off stage. So many people would have panicked, or screamed at the light operator, or just froze like a deer in headlights. Not Kevin- he just flashed that famous grin, laid back down on the stage and pulled up his toga. The crowd went wild!

And just before the annual Awards Ceremony, he told me, "Coach, I am bringing you a steak dinner tonight!" I said, "Sure you are, Kevin, we don't even serve food at the ceremony." I arrived that evening to find a fully cooked steak, baked potato and roll in a take out box. He was a man of his word.

As we all go through the shock and pain of this tragedy, and while he was here for such a brief time, I feel so very blessed to have known Kevin.

We lost a good man, and he will be missed.
